There’s something for everyone with Kittl whether you are a designer or a non-designer (or an individual or a team!) for creating stunning visual content. Let’s unpack it in this post!

Creating a DIY Design Toolkit

While I am a Canva Verified Expert and Canva Creator I spend 90% of my day in Canva designing templates and training companies to use Canva in teams… but I still love checking out other design tools. For the last decade I’ve shared tools and software with my audiences online and at major events around the world. I share what helps you run your business. And I have always advocated for using a handful of tools to express your creativity – desktop and apps.

So while I love Canva, I do believe that Kittl has a place in this toolkit. Both have different features and together… you have a powerhouse of visual content creation. Let’s take a look.

What is Kittl?

I first heard about Kittl in February 2024 when searching for a tool that would allow me to create cool typography without needing to open any fancy design software. Canva has some cool text effects but I wanted to be able to adapt and warp text in fun and creative ways. Enter Kittl.

Since that time I have experimented with other features in Kittl’s toolkit and discovered that not only does it have some amazing functionality for typopgraphy but they also have cool templates, elements, and mindblowing Kittl AI features that allow you to create some amazing visuals in really cool ways (which I will share below).

The team at Kittl is always adding features. Wth Kittl design has been historically focused on typography, and Print-on-Demand (POD) functionality for creating cool designs for Vintage T-shirts. But it’s way more than that now and worthy of adding to your toolkit.

And it’s exciting to know that they have attracted over 30 million+ in funding as a private company. Put simply, the Kittl team has the fire power to keep developing their software to be something incredible.

What’s to love about Kittl Design Tool?

Kittl features a large range of elements, images, templates, text effects and more. But it also has a blisteringly fast AI image generator, and vector tools to play with. It has become my happy place for designing fun things like Tshirts and AI-generated illustrations. Quite honestly, you can do a lot in Kittl that you can’t do in other tools… and while Canva will always be my go-to tool, I believe Kittl has it’s place considering features that I can’t always get in other tools.

We will get into the design features below, but let’s just say straight up that Kittl’s text-to-graphic generative AI is amazing! Check out the examples of T-Shirt designs I created Kittl below. Each of these illustrations was generated with a simple AI prompt (and then the typography created in Kittl):

I don’t know about you, but considering this was a first attempt at using the Kittl AI tools, I think these results are pretty cool.

So, let’s dive into the core features in Kittl design and how you can use it for some great designs as well as using Kittl AI to create some fun images!

1. 1000s of ready-to-use templates

There are thousands of professionally designed templates in Kittl design tool, ready to use for personal or commercial products. The quality is fabulous, and I am very impressed by the typography and illustrations in the Kittl library.

There’s a certain level of pro design that shines through in Kittl’s templates that make them stand out and it’s largely due to the typography and text effects.

Designers using Kittl will likely love that they can access vector files, something that many other non-Adobe tools have missed.

And of course, please be aware of Kittl’s licensing when using templates and content created in Kittl.

While Kittl’s earlier focus was on Print on Demand businesses and templates for products like T-Shirts, Logos and Posters, they have expanded their template library to include marketing templates. So, now you’ll find invitations to social media templates to banners to cards to posters and more.

2. Elements Galore in Kittl Design Tool

Kittl users have direct access to thousands of illustrations, photos, icons, textures and more. While it’s still a relatively small library compared to Canva, it’s growing steadily.

You can drag and drop frames, icons, illustrations and shapes into your designs. Elements are searchable individually or in collections, although currently collections are a little tricky to find. I recommend clicking on the AI assistant (Kittl Co-Pilot) to find similar elements or change the style, generate new elements (with AI) and more:

Need some cool Y2K elements? No problem! I could find loads of elements to use in these fun sports logos:

And guess what? You can generate your own elements by using Kittl’s AI Image Generator.

Here’s an example of a peony flower illustration I created with Kittl’s AI (and it’s in vector format, so it’s color changeable on the template):

Kittl’s element library is constantly growing and if I can’t find what I want, I can use Kittl AI to create it. That’s impressive!

3. Typography & Text Effects in Kittl

Kittl has some of the coolest fonts and typography of any DIY Design Software. It was one of the first things I noticed when I started creating Kittl designs. Step into Kittl’s typography here.

You can search Kittl’s fonts by style. Looking for Y2K fonts? Easy. Want Streetwear fonts? No problem. Searching for some Elegant serif fonts? You got it. And don’t forget the usual suspect categories such as Vintage, Serif, Sans Serif, Script and more for your Kittl designs.

You may have noticed some cool typography in the header images for this blog post. Thanks to Nika Design for their template in Kittl:

Fun fact. Kittl was fonded by designer and super-talented lettering artist/type designer) Tobias Saul! Now it makes sense why Kittl designs feature some next-level typography and text effects:

Working with type in Kittl designs is more than just fonts though. it’s text effects like shading and shadows that allow you to achieve some very cool results. I’m talking advanced effects like 3D bevel and extruded text:

But let’s actually take it to the next level with text transformations…

4. Advanced Text Transformation in Kittl AI

Now that we’re talking Typography, let’s play with Kittl’s advanced text transformation.

Kittl design tool lets you do all sorts of cool hings with typography in a way that hasn’t been easy in DIY design tools i AIn the past.

This Kittl feature is called advanced real-time “Text Transformation”. According to Kittl, it “lets you warp any text with just a few clicks”. That tracks! It really is as easy as a few clicks. I found it super easy to aply effects like custom, arch, distort, rise, circle and angle to my Kittl designs:

These features are so much fun to use, and surprisingly uncomplicated to learn in Kittl designs. Using the “Distort” setting, I was able to warp the typography in this Kittl design to make it fit the outline of the mountain. Perfect for a T-Shirt.

As I mentioned you can easily use pre-set text transformation styles like “Angle”, “Arch” and “Curved Text” to simplify the process of creating stunning typography. Trust me, it’s fun creating curved and arched text effects.

What do you think?

With fonts galore plus text transformation and text effects, you can bring your Kittl design to life.

5. Millions of Photos

As a designer I love using stock photos, but I particularly love it when stock photos are integrated in tools that I use. I love this about Kittl and their cool integration with Unsplash gives you access to an awesome community of photographers. You’ll never find it difficult to find that perfect photo again! The best part? Most of the photos are free to use.

6. Kittl AI Powered Tools

I’ve mentioned that Kittl AI is awesome so let’s dive into just a few of the Kittl AI tools that make Kittl Design tool so fabulous. With Kittl AI you can create cool (I mean really cool) things like Vector Logo icons and slick visuals like my “kids on bikes” and “spaceman” T-Shirt designs above.

The level of detail and quality of the images you can generate with Kittl’s technology is fabulous. I’ve mentioned a few of Kittl Ai’s features already but the Kittl AI features include:

  • AI Image Generator – generate images using Kittl AI in any style you like by adding simple prompts.
  • AI Vectorizer – Vectorize an image in a single click (whaaaaat?). Check out my tutorial here to see how this works.
  • SVG Converter – easily convert images or photos into SVG in just one click. You can select between moochrome or full color mode. Kittl AI will deliver you a fully editable vector (I know, it’s nuts).
  • AI Background Remover – remove the background from your image in one click.
  • AI Image Upscaler – increase the size or resolution of any image in just one click (note that this does not compromise quality of the image).

The following is an example of using Kittl AI by using the Image Generator and AI Vectorizer to vectorize an image. The image on the left was created with a simple prompt in Kittl’s AI Generator. Then I was able to vectorize it by using Kittl’s AI Vectorizer as per the screenshot below:

With only a couple of clicks to produce an image with Kittl AI, then remove the background, then covert it into a template and make it a 3-color changeable vector avatar…. well, color me impressed.

The following T-Shirt design was also created using a combination of Kittl’s AI (prompting with text to create the Sloth image) and typography/text effects. While there is a sloth on the T-Shirt design, it certainly wasn’t a slow process! It was super fast to create the sloth element and convert it to an vectorized image with 3 colors:

Oh and did I mention that you can also convert photos and images into SVG in one click:

Some thoughts on Kittl AI (and AI in general)
  1. Kittl AI produces some of the best results I have seen in any AI image software. I don’t know what they are feeding it, but it’s definitely working.
  2. Use AI responsibly. If you create something with AI, read Kittl’s terms and conditions about what you can use it for.
  3. Be sure to disclose that what you have created is created with AI, especially if you are creating something to sell.
  4. Used in conjunction with Kittl’s other typography tools and elements, AI can be an extra team member helping you to create content. Whether it’s using a tool like Magic Write to generate content ideas in Canva to using image generators like in Kittl, AI can be used in positive ways to help your workflow.
  5. I should mention that as a blogger and designer, I appreciate the AI that improves productivity while being simultaneously challenged by AI that pulls from millions of pieces of content created by creatives. I hope that as the “guidelines” and standards around AI evolve, fair compensation and credit happens for creators. But for now, AI is here to stay and most industries accept that it is part of how we work. What we can do as AI evolves is to be responsible users, and acknowledge where AI forms a main component of our work. More of that later.

7. Other Kittl Design Tool Features

There are more Kittl design features to explore. These include:

  • Mockups – use Kittl’s AI-Powered Mockups to create Mockups in one click
  • Infinite Canvas – this is a cool feature that allows you to create multiple artboards in one canvas. Perfect for creating collections.
  • Magic Recoloring – Choose from trending color palettes and then instantly replace the colors in any design with a single click (there’s that single click again!).
  • AI Quote Generator – generate quotes for your merch or social posts.

More and more features are being added all the time, so watch this space.
